About the event:

The Insular Cases have condemned to oblivion a definitive solution to the political status of Puerto Rico, maintaining it as a colony of the United States for 125 years. El Junte | México, novela de Pedro Ángel Palou

"México" is Pedro Palou's historical novel that covers five centuries of Mexico City's history through the lives of four families.

"México" is the most recent installment of the Mexican writer and academic Pedro Ángel Palou. This historical novel presents transcendental moments in the history of Mexico City through the lives of four families that span centuries and diverse social conditions. From the fall of Tenochtitlan to the 1985 earthquake, the author covers five centuries of the history of the Mexican capital and the fortunes and misfortunes of the societies that have formed it.

As an author, Palou has distinguished himself by bringing aspects of Mexican life from history to fiction. He has done so through influential personalities such as Porfirio Díaz, Pancho Villa, Lázaro Cárdenas, and Emiliano Zapata.

Born in Puebla, Pedro Ángel Palou is an award-winning novelist and essayist with over 30 publications. In 1991 he won the Jorge Ibargüengoitia National Prize for Literature for his novel Amores enormes. In 1997, Palou received the 1997 Latin American Essay Award Las Imágenes de América Latina for La ciudad crítica. In addition, in México he has also been awarded the Xavier Clavijero National History Prize for his work La casa del silencio (1998) and the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize for Con la muerte en los puños (2003). He is a professor in the Spanish program at Tufts University.

“(Mexico) is a more ambitious novel, but also more intimate; instead of telling the epic history of the city, we tell the story of how it is lived, suffered, dreamed of, loved, through 500 years”, Pedro Ángel Palou in El Heraldo de México, June 6, 2022.

El Junte | Picando Alante (Película)

Picando Alante is a dramedy that reveals a profound social critique of Puerto Rico today. The celebrated Puerto Rican actors’ collective Teatro Breve presents the story of a lower-middle-class family trying to get into the business of growing and selling medical cannabis as a solution to their many financial plights. Their plans collide with reality, and everything gets complicated.

Directed by Israel Lugo, Picando Alante features performances by Marisé Álvarez, Mikephillippe Oliveros, Lourdes Quiñones, Luis Gonzaga, Lucienne Hernández, Juan Pablo Díaz, René Monclova and Cristina Soler. The film is a production of Teatro Breve and DeLuz.

During the Puerto Rico Film Festival (PRFF) 2022, Picando Alante received the Best National Film award.

“Picando Alante is the result of the creative process of a group of artists and professionals committed to doing excellent work, particularly with the development and evolution of the Puerto Rican film industry. It’s a film with its own voice, with stories where we see ourselves reflected, where we can continue exploring and expressing our identity in the cinema”, Israel Lugo, director.

Guitarist, singer, composer Cecilia Zabala was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1975. Throughout her career, she has expressed her musical creativity using her guitar and her voice, creating original compositions that blend sensitivity, emotion, technique and intuition. Her music draws on a rich mixture of influences, from Argentinian folklore, the contemporary language of the twentieth century, jazz, tango, and Brazilian music.

Since 2006, Cecilia has carried out an intense calendar of international tours in Europe, North America and Latin America. After twenty years of artistic career she has launched eight albums with her own compositions and arrangements in various musical styles. Most recently, in 2016 Cecilia released her eight album, El color del silencio, with her own compositions for solo guitars and voice.

Meet Sol y Canto:

Sol y Canto is the award winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and percussionist Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist, singer and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice and Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and inventive compositions, Sol y Canto is known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences of all ages. On occasion the group is accompanied by virtuoso musicians from Latin America and the U.S.

Sol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance, laugh, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding, intricate guitar playing, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos, and liberal use of vocal improvisation, the duo often sounds like a much larger ensemble.

Since 1994, Sol y Canto has brought audiences to their feet from the Kennedy Center to the California World Music Festival, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as countless club shows and house concerts. The Boston Globe hails them as “sublime ambassadors of the Pan-Latin tradition”.
